Pittsburgh Hosts “Tour Your Future”

On September 23, Valspar's Global Technical Center (GTC) in Pittsburgh hosted "Tour Your Future" for girls interested in pursuing a career in science. Valspar partners with the Carnegie Science Center, to provide an opportunity for junior high girls to tour workplaces focused on careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Thirteen Valspar employees helped host the event. They kicked off the day with background about what they do and their education and invited the girls to share their specific interests in the science fields. The girls watched a Valspar video that featured our different divisions and details about the packaging coatings work at the GTC. Employees then led the girls on a lab tour, stopping at four different stations — analytical, taste test, resin and application.

After the lab tour, the girls participated in a question-and-answer session with employees. The girls asked questions like, "Did you think that you would end up here?" and "What got you interested in this?"

Lastly, employees shared a roadmap with the girls to help show them all of the different groups and functions that it takes to make a business successful. These groups included research, manufacturing, marketing/technical sales, and supply chain. Employees agreed it was a refreshing experience to show the next generation the excitement and challenge of STEM careers.
